A phone case that adds a second screen and up to 2 terabytes of storage is now being pitched as the future of selfies.
The idea of using the main camera for selfies isn’t new. Motorola’s Razr flip phones, Xiaomi’s 17 Pro, and Samsung’s Galaxy A80 all experimented with designs that flipped or rotated cameras to face forward. What Dockcase has done here is sidestep the engineering complexity by moving the solution into an accessory. The case itself becomes the enabler, with its rear display acting as a live viewfinder.

Storage is the other headline feature. A microSD slot built into the case can expand capacity by up to 2 TB, connected through the phone’s USB‑C port. For anyone shooting large volumes of photos or 4K video, that’s a significant buffer against the limits of internal storage. Dockcase says the decision not to allow direct video recording to the card was deliberate, citing heat and power concerns. Still, the ability to offload files quickly is a practical advantage.

The case also introduces small but thoughtful touches. A magnetic ring around the rear display supports accessories such as a finger grip or desk mount. A crossbody strap can be attached for easier carrying during travel or events. Pass‑through charging is supported at up to 45 watts, though wireless charging is blocked because the rear screen interferes with MagSafe’s required proximity.

Dockcase’s Selfix sits on the iPhone 17 Pro, a Kickstarter gamble waiting for May delivery.
Color options are straightforward: white, black, and pink. Retail pricing is set at $129, but early backers on Kickstarter can pledge $79 for either iPhone 17 Pro model. Extras like straps, cards, and ring holders can be bundled into the pledge. Dockcase has a track record on the platform, having shipped more than a dozen products including hubs and docks, which lends some credibility to its campaign. Deliveries are scheduled to begin worldwide in May, though—as with any crowdfunded project—there is inherent risk.

The magnetic ring frames the display, but is this accessory a camera rig or just a case?
The Selfix case is not without compromises. Losing wireless charging may frustrate some users, and the inability to record video directly to the card limits its utility for filmmakers. But for those who care most about selfies, the trade‑off is clear: better images, more storage, and a case that does more than just protect.
What this accessory suggests is that the boundary between phone and case is blurring. As cameras improve and storage demands grow, the case is no longer just an afterthought. It is becoming a platform in its own right, one that can redefine how people use their devices. The next question is not whether cases will add features, but how far they will go in reshaping the smartphone experience itself.
