In a significant move for the AI community, OpenAI has launched two new open-weight AI models, gpt-oss-120b and gpt-oss-20b. The announcement, made on August 5, 2025, marks a new chapter for the company, known for its powerful closed-source models.

The new models are designed to provide advanced reasoning capabilities and are optimized to run on standard hardware, including laptops and edge devices. This accessibility is a key feature, making sophisticated AI more widely available. Both models support features such as function calling and web Browse, empowering developers to create more dynamic and interactive applications.
Released under the permissive Apache 2.0 license, the models are available for broad use, commercial or otherwise. This licensing decision encourages widespread adoption and collaboration within the AI ecosystem.

The news was first teased by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman on the platform X, where he expressed pride in the team's accomplishment. "gpt-oss is out! we made an open model that performs at the level of o4-mini and runs on a high-end laptop (WTF!!)," Altman posted, also mentioning a smaller version designed for phones. "super proud of the team; big triumph of technology."

OpenAI's official account on X corroborated the news, simply stating, "Our open models are here. Both of them." The release of these models, particularly their open-weight nature and efficiency on consumer-grade hardware, is a major development that could accelerate innovation and reshape the landscape of AI development.
