A camera trigger that can detect lightning strikes more than 30 miles away, even in daylight, is now being offered to photographers for $329 on Kickstarter.

The Bolt Hunter doesn’t wait for lightning to reveal itself. It looks for the faint flashes inside clouds — the precursors to a full strike — and fires the shutter milliseconds earlier than your reflexes ever could. That predictive approach is what sets it apart from traditional lightning triggers, which simply react to sudden bursts of brightness and often miss the moment or overexpose the shot.

Jeff Boyce, the photographer and product designer behind Bolt Hunter, has spent more than a decade chasing storms. He knows the frustration of inconsistent triggering, sluggish daytime response, and the way ambient light can throw off existing devices. His solution is compact, weather-sealed, and designed to slot into a camera’s cold shoe with a single-button setup. No menus, no fiddling. Just point your lens at the sky and let the device do the hard work.

Shutter lag — the tiny delay between pressing the button and the image being recorded — is another obstacle. Bolt Hunter compensates for it automatically, starting the exposure just early enough to catch the different phases of a lightning storm. That means not just the strike itself, but the branching, the glow, the fleeting structures that make lightning photography so elusive.

Power is handled by a built-in lithium battery that Boyce says will last more than 48 hours on a single charge. For storm chasers, that endurance matters. There’s also a Bluetooth app, so you can adjust settings or trigger remotely while staying sheltered. In practice, the detection range has been successful at over 30 miles in daylight, with even greater reach at night. Still, the system isn’t infallible — if a strike comes without a preceding intra-cloud flash, the camera won’t see it coming.

Compatibility is broad. Canon, Sony, Fujifilm, Panasonic, Olympus, Pentax, Leica, Hasselblad, Minolta, Sigma, Contax, Kodak, Samsung — most major brands are supported. The Kickstarter pledge price is set at $329, with a retail price of $349. If funding goals are met, shipping is scheduled worldwide in June.

Boyce describes Bolt Hunter as one of the smallest lightning triggers available, but its ambition is larger than size. It’s about turning a pursuit that once demanded patience, luck, and hours of waiting into something more deliberate. Predictive triggering doesn’t just increase the odds of success; it changes the rhythm of storm photography itself.

The device arrives at a time when cameras are already capable of extraordinary feats in low light and fast action. But lightning remains one of the most unpredictable subjects in photography.
